"Eye level" should be determined according to the primary use of
the room. This means, if most of the time people are standing in
the space, then "eye level" should be directed at viewers who

at least 1 to 1 1/2 inches into the stud.

• Check that you are not hanging a heavy picture on wallboard
only. Hang heavy objects only from
a wall stud or
beam.
• Hold the picture up and make a small pencil mark on the wall
where the top edge of the frame
will be.
• Choose an appropriate hook. You might want a two-piece
nail-and-hook, or a hollow-wall anchor
for heavier
objects
• Holding the picture's wire taut, measure the distance between
the wire at full tension and the top
of the frame.
Measure down that distance from the pencil mark you made on the
wall and mark
that spot - that's where the hook will
go.
• Nail the picture hook into the wall where you've just made a
mark.
• Hang the picture and adjust it so it's straight.

the master bath and put something else in the powder room.

frames?
• Situate artwork so that sunlight is not beaming onto it. This
will prevent fading.
• Use acid-free mats to protect artwork from discoloration.
• Clean the glass carefully. Spray a cloth with cleaner and then
wipe the glass.
• Use a very soft cloth or lamb's wool tool when dusting a fine
frame. This will prevent scratches.
• Have an ultraviolet window film installed to protect art (and
fabrics) from fading as a result of
sunlight.
• Hold onto opposite sides of the picture frame when moving a
picture. Don't carry the frame by
the picture-hanging
wire, because it may give way and the picture will crash to the
ground.
• Keep valuable artwork out of kitchens and bathrooms, where
steamy, dirty air poses a threat.
32. How many categories do frames fall into?
Frames loosely fall into three categories: traditional (often
wood frames with some embellishment such as ornate carving,
Oriental accents, applique curlicues, or canvas or linen
inserts), modern (metal or ultraplain wood, perhaps only a
sliver of it showing as you face the picture) and transitional
(minimal ornamentation with a moderate amount of frame showing
on its face).

walnut-stained picture frames.
39. What kind of frames work nicely with color
family portraits?
Use the same or similar frames (and mats) to unite a grouping,
for example, whitewashed wood frames, pewter frames or brass
frames.
40. Without using pictures, what else might I
decorate my walls?
• Use an attractive textile such as a tapestry, quilt (even an
inexpensive new one), antique
tablecloth or rug. These
can often be suspended from a curtain rod.
• Display interesting clothing, such as a silk kimono or antique
christening gown.
• Hang musical instruments such as a trumpet, tambourine, guitar,
banjo and violin. You can fill in
blank spaces with
inexpensive sheet music, attached to the wall with nondamaging
adhesive
dough.
• Go retro with a grouping of baskets. They were popular and
inexpensive in the 1970s, and they
still are today.
• Put up pretty platters, plates or shallow bowls by using
inexpensive spring-loaded plate hangers.
• Hang a framed mirror, as long as it reflects something
attractive, such as a fireplace.

frame, a Victorian home's
gingerbread trim or a
stained glass window.

wall.
41. How about decorate with tapestry wall
hangings?

place of visual warmth and elegance. Grace your walls with the
bold color and design of European wall hangings. Enjoy the
ambiance of this rich, and wonderful art form, when you bring
home the warm tradition of fine woven wall hangings.
42. How should I hang my wall tapestry?
Many of wall tapestries are finished with a secondary backing.
On the back of your tapestry, you will find a sleeve or rod
pocket running the width of your tapestry. This is sewn in to
accept a rod or dowel, which should be securely mounted to your
wall with appropriate drapery brackets. Drapery rods, wooden
dowels and finials that will complement your environment are
readily available at most hardware centers and decorative
accessory stores. Follow the accompanying directions and install
as you would any standard drapery rod.
43. How do I clean my tapestry?
Because your tapestry is mounted on a wall, it should not be
subject to the same abuse as your carpet and upholstered
seating; therefore it should need less frequent maintenance.
(Although some have elected to place a tapestry on the floor as
some of the designs lend them to this. Others use them as
bedcovering or table covers, which is a traditional use.)
Vacuuming the front and back of your tapestry once or twice per
year, with your vacuum upholstery attachment, should be
sufficient maintenance for many years to come. Consider cleaning
your tapestries about as often you do your fine window
treatments. Your tapestry must be dry cleaned by an experienced
drapery dry cleaning plant.
44. My tapestry has a curl to it. What can I
do?
A curl in a tapestry is not unusual. Tapestries will bend and
curl and may change with humidity differences. Some recommend
decorative weights be hung at the bottom corners. Although
weights will help to keep the tapestry tight, over time they may
cause stretching on the sides. Some have sewn drapery weights
across the bottom of the backing. Evenly and regularly placed
weights work well and apply less stress on one particular
section.
The easiest fix is to buy a wooden rod or dowel the width of the
tapestry. Cut the rod just a tad shorter than the tapestry
width.
About an inch up from the bottom open the seam just slightly
more than the rod’s diameter. You want the rod to slide in, but
not be too loose.
Now put a whipstitch above and below your opening to avoid
future unravelling. Slide the rod in. Adjust it into place. With
a little time, the even weight and rigidity of the rod will get
rid of the curl and help keep your tapestry flat in he future.
45. Will my tapestry fade?
Your tapestry is a textile and may fade as any textile might. In
many environments, decades may pass before any noticeable fading
occurs. Antique tapestries tend to be faded and washed out, and
many people may actually find that their new tapestry's
appearance improves with a little aging. (Some pay extra to have
them washed or tea stained. If you wish to minimize fading,
avoid hanging your tapestry in direct sunlight. In addition,
closing drapes or blinds is a good precaution. Applying a window
film or tint to reduce damaging ultraviolet light rays is also
an alternative.
46. I have a few collections of things that are
cherished but unused: old school prize ribbons,
favorite
record albums, sets of postcards bought on a trip abroad, what
can I do?
Take them out of the drawers, and give them new life as framed,
autobiographical wall decor.
47. There is so much beautiful art on postage
stamps that I really wanted to find a way to display
it on
the wall, what can I do?

onto premium artist canvases, covering them with a protective
and moisture proof finish. They represent a truly unique,
tasteful and decorative addition to your own home

Unique switch plates are an inevitable part of wall decor. With
outlets made of ceramic or porcelain and with accessories
created in a floral or a classical way, they seem to add that
elegant look which is fitting and appropriate. Decorative plates
and Holders can make the dining and kitchen rooms look
attractive. Plate holders can actually be used to show off some
favorite pictures or family photographs.
